Truro, N.S. (June 13, 2020) – The 2020 Maritime Junior Hockey League (MHL) Entry Draft was conducted on Saturday, with 120 players selected as the league’s twelve teams built for the future. The draft was held online due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Eastlink Community TV broadcast the first two rounds live in Nova Scotia, P.E.I. and Newfoundland, with coverage in New Brunswick on Rogers TV. From there, the draft continued on the MHL website, powered by HockeyTech. Players selected represent some of the best young hockey talent in Atlantic Canada, including a number of territorial picks that were previously announced.
The Valley Wildcats held the first selection and chose Ethan Landry from St. Andrew’s College. The Halifax-native had seven goals and 21 assists in 54 games. It was his second season at St. Andrew’s after playing for the Halifax McDonald’s of the Nova Scotia Major Midget Hockey League (NSMMHL) in 2017-18, where he posted 15 goals and 21 assists in 31 games.
With the first of two picks in the first round, the Miramichi Timberwolves selected Braeden MacPhee. Spending last season with the Moncton Flyers of the N.B./P.E.I. Major Midget Hockey League (NBPEIMMHL), MacPhee scored ten goals to go with twelve assists in 37 games. The 16-year-old from Moncton also had three goals and one assist in four playoffs games.
The Grand Falls Rapids selected Bathurst-native Antoine Roy third overall. In 40 games with Rothesay Netherwood Prep School, Roy had twelve goals and 22 assists.
South Shore also had two first-round selections, taking Alex Carr of Sackville, N.S. fourth overall. Carr, the first defenseman chosen in the draft, had six goals and twelve assists in 35 games with the Cole Harbour Wolfpack of the NSMMHL. He also posted one goal and seven assists in twelve playoffs games.
The Truro Bearcats selected Trey Sturge fifth overall from the Sydney Rush of the NSMMHL. The 16-year-old from Antigonish nearly tripled his point production in 2019-20, with 16 goals and 19 assists in 35 games in Sydney, as well as two assists in four playoffs games.
With the sixth overall pick, the Edmundston Blizzard chose Jacob Long. The hometown defenseman had five goals and five assists in 30 games with the Fredericton Caps of the NBPEIMMHL in 2019-20. He added one assist in six playoff games.
Campbellton had two of the next three selections, picking Camden Pellerine of the NSMMHL’s Dartmouth Steele Subaru seventh. The Stillwater Lake, N.S. native had six goals and 14 assists in 31 games with Dartmouth in 2019-20.
Picking eighth, Miramichi chose defenseman Jett McCullum. The 15-year-old from Moncton scored seven goals and added 15 assists in 33 games with the Moncton Flyers last season.
At ninth overall, Campbellton selected forward Cael MacDonald. In 33 games with the Halifax McDonald’s last season, he posted 15 goals and 13 assists. MacDonald also tallied six assists in ten playoff games.
The Fredericton Red Wings made their first selection of the day at tenth overall, picking Sydney, N.S.-native Brendan MacRitchie. In 34 games with the Sydney Rush, MacRitchie has 13 goals and twelve assists, with one goal and one assist in four playoffs games.
With their second pick of the first round, Edmundston went with Woodstock-native Matthew McHatten. A teammate of their previous first-round pick Jacob Long, McHatten had 13 goals and 24 assists in 38 games in 2019-20. He added two goals and three assists in six playoff games.
Closing out the first round, South Shore selected Brandon Abbass. The 16-year-old forward from Halifax had ten goals and nine assists in 35 games with the Halifax McDonald’s last season, posting three assists in seven playoff games.
