Truro, N.S. (July 10, 2021) – The 2021 Maritime Junior Hockey League (MHL) Entry Draft was held on Saturday, with 120 of the best young hockey players in the region selected to the league’s twelve teams over the course of ten rounds. The first two rounds were carried live on Eastlink Community TV, simulcast on Rogers TV in New Brunswick, and also available on Eastlink’s YouTube channel.
With the first overall pick, the Miramichi Timberwolves selected 16-year-old defenseman Ryan Hayes from the Cape Breton West Islanders U18. In 29 games last season, Hayes had three goals and three assists.
In a pre-draft trade, the Campbellton Tigers swapped first round picks with the Valley Wildcats to select second overall. With the position, the Tigers drafted 16-year-old left winger Philippe Collette from the Moncton Flyers U18. Collette had five goals and nine assists with the Flyers last season, with five goals and nine assists in eight playoff games.
The Grand Falls Rapids made a deal with the Pictou County Weeks Crushers to swap first round picks and took 18-year-old defenseman Joachim Matulu third overall. Matulu had two goals and three assists in sixteen games with the Moncton Flyers U18 last season and added five assists in eight playoff games.
The Fredericton Red Wings stuck close to home, picking 17-year-old centre Cam Thomson of the Fredericton Caps U18 with the fourth overall selection. Thomson had twelve goals and eight assists in fourteen games with the Caps last season, as well as four goals and six assists in ten playoff games.
With their second pick in the first round, Miramichi selected 17-year-old defenseman Travis Badcock. In 20 games with the East Coast Blizzard last season, Badcock had five goals and eight assists to go with four goals and eleven assists in nine playoff games.
Campbellton selected 16-year-old left winger Dominic Deschenes from the Mount Academy Saints U17 sixth overall.
The Edmundston Blizzard picked 17-year-old forward Noah Matulu of the Moncton Flyers U18 seventh overall. Matulu had one goal and two assists in sixteen games last season with four goals and four assists in eight playoff games.
After dropping back to the eighth overall pick, the Pictou County Weeks Crushers selected 18-year-old defenseman Keir Jordan from the Cape Breton West Islanders U18. He had three goals and seventeen assists in 29 games with Cape Breton last season, with one goal and two assists in four playoff games.
Fredericton used their second pick in the first round to select 16-year-old right winger Gus El-Tahhan from the Mount Academy Saints U17.
With the tenth overall pick, the Truro Bearcats selected 16-year-old left winger Blake Pilgram-Edwards from the Steele Subaru U18. In 28 games last season, Pilgram-Edwards had five goals and seven assists, with one goal and four assists in four playoff games.
After the trade with Campbellton moved them down the draft list to eleventh overall, the Valley Wildcats selected 16-year-old defenseman Brady Wambolt from the Steele Subaru U18. Wamboldt had two goals and fourteen assists in 28 games last season, with five assists in four playoff games.
Finishing off the first round, the Truro Bearcats selected 16-year-old left winger Lane Lochead from the Weeks Majors U18. Lochead tallied four goals and eighteen assists in 29 games with Weeks last season, adding one goal and one assist in three playoff games.

Les deux premiers tours ont été diffusés en direct sur Eastlink Community TV, transmis simultanément sur Rogers TV au Nouveau-Brunswick et également disponibles sur la chaine YouTube d’Eastlink.
Avec le premier choix au total, les Timberwolves de Miramichi ont sélectionné le défenseur de 16 ans Ryan Hayes, des West Islanders U18 du Cap-Breton. En 29 matchs la saison dernière, Hayes a inscrit trois buts et trois mentions d’aide.
Dans un échange avant le repêchage, les Tigres de Campbellton ont échangé des choix de première ronde avec les Wildcats de Valley pour sélectionner deuxième au total. Avec ce rang favorable, les Tigres ont repêché l’ailier gauche de 16 ans Philippe Collette, des Flyers de Moncton U18. Collette a récolté 5 buts et 9 mentions d’aide en 16 parties avec les Flyers la saison dernière, avec une récolte identique de 5 buts et 9 mentions d’aide en seulement 8 matchs éliminatoires.
Les Rapides de Grand-Sault ont conclu une entente avec les Weeks Crushers de Pictou County pour échanger des choix de première ronde et ont sélectionné le défenseur de 18 ans Joachim Matulu au troisième rang du classement général. Matulu a récolté 2 buts et 3 mentions d’aide en 16 matchs avec les Flyers de Moncton U18 la saison dernière et a ajouté 5 mentions d’aide en 8 matchs éliminatoires.
Les Red Wings de Fredericton ont repêché près de chez eux, choisissant le centre de 17 ans Cam Thomson, des Fredericton Caps U18, avec le quatrième choix au total. Thomson a récolté 12 buts et 8 passes en 14 matchs avec les Caps la saison dernière, ainsi que 4 buts et 6 passes en 10 matchs des séries éliminatoires.
Avec son deuxième choix au premier tour, Miramichi a sélectionné le défenseur de 17 ans Travis Badcock. En 20 matchs avec le East Coast Blizzard la saison dernière, Badcock a récolté 5 buts et 8 passes en plus de 4 buts et 11 passes en 9 matchs éliminatoires.

Wambodt a récolté 2 buts et 14 mentions d’aide en 28 matchs la saison dernière, avec 5 mentions d’aide en 4 matchs éliminatoires.
À la fin du premier tour, les Bearcats de Truro ont sélectionné l’ailier gauche de 16 ans Lane Lochead, des Weeks Majors U18. Lochead a inscrit 4 buts et 18 passes en 29 matchs avec les Weeks la saison dernière, ajoutant 1 but et 1 passe en 3 matchs éliminatoires.
