EDMUNDSTON, New Brunswick – Former Edmundston Blizzard star goalkeeper Francis Asselin will continue his career with the Nipissing University Lakers in North Bay, Ontario for the 2019-2020 season.
The 20-year-old from Saint-Jérôme, Québec, has committed with his new team yesterday (Tuesday). He will report to the camp with full confidence.
“I had a good phone conversation with coach Mike McParland and the situation of the goalies is very interesting for me. The important thing is to get your chance as quickly as possible and to look good. I am confident that everything will be fine, “explained Francis Asselin.
The Lakers are part of the 20 teams of the Ontario University Athletics (OUA). The Lakers struggled last season in their division finishing second to last with 8 wins, 19 losses and 1 overtime loss. Each team plays a calendar of 28 regular games. Asselin will have the opportunity to face the shots of his former teammate Kyle Ward, who played with the mighty Gee-Gees of the University of Ottawa (22-2-1-3).
Former Blizzard No. 31 already feels he will enjoy his days in Ontario. “North Bay is a small community (50,000 people) with a university of about 5,000 students. I think the academic support will be good, which is an important aspect for me. “
His goal, of course, is to succeed academically and earn a bachelor’s degree in physical education within four years. “I will have to study in English, so it will be a nice challenge for me. As far as hockey is concerned, I hope I can continue my journey after graduation, whether in North America or Europe on a professional level.
Francis Asselin will not soon forget his adoptive city of Edmundston. “My two years in Edmundston have allowed me to grow as a hockey player and as a person,” he said. I have had magical moments with amazing people both on and off the ice. I also had the chance to live with the best billet family in the city (the Lang family), which made my experience even more memorable. Certainly one of the most popular and spectacular players in the Blizzard’s young history thanks to his charisma, his talent and his ability to lift the crowd, Francis Asselin was without a doubt one of the mastermind behind the Blizzard’s playoffs championship in its first campaign in the Maritime Junior A Hockey League. A real fairy tale! Asselin played 69 games in two seasons with Edmundston. In 2017-18, he posted a 2.60 GAA, compared to 3.09 last season.

Francis Asselin évoluera avec la Nipissing University
EDMUNDSTON, Nouveau-Brunswick – L’ancien gardien vedette du Blizzard d’Edmundston, Francis Asselin, poursuivra sa carrière avec les Lakers de la Nipissing University à North Bay, en Ontario, cet hiver.
Le jeune homme de 20 ans de Saint-Jérôme, au Québec, s’est entendu avec sa nouvelle équipe hier (mardi). Il se présentera au camp en pleine confiance.
« J’ai eu une bonne discussion téléphonique avec l’entraineur Mike McParland et la situation des gardiens est très intéressante pour moi. L’important, c’est d’obtenir sa chance le plus rapidement possible et de faire bonne figure. Je suis confiant que tout ira bien », a expliqué Francis Asselin.
Les Lakers font partie de l’une des 20 équipes de la Ontario University Athletics (OUA). Dans sa section la saison dernière, Nipissing a éprouvé des difficultés en terminant à l’avant dernier rang avec une fiche de 8 victoires, 19 défaites et 1 revers en prolongation. Chacune des équipes joue 28 rencontres. Asselin aura notamment l’occasion d’affronter les tirs de son ancien coéquipier Kyle Ward qui s’aligne avec les redoutables Gee-Gees de l’Université d’Ottawa (22-2-1-3).
L’ancien numéro 31 du Blizzard sent déjà qu’il se plaira en Ontario. « North Bay est une petite communauté (50 000 habitants) avec une université d’environ 5 000 étudiants. Je pense que l’encadrement sera bien, ce qui est un aspect important pour moi. »
Son objectif est évidemment de réussir sur le plan des études et d’obtenir son baccalauréat en éducation physique d’ici quatre ans. « Je devrai étudier en anglais, donc ce sera un beau défi pour moi. Pour ce qui est du hockey, j’espère pouvoir poursuivre mon cheminement après les études, que ce soit en Amérique du Nord ou en Europe sur le plan professionnel.
Francis Asselin n’oubliera pas de sitôt sa ville adoptive d’Edmundston. « Mes deux années à Edmundston m’auront permis de grandir en tant qu’hockeyeur et comme personne, a-t-il relaté. J’ai vécu des moments magiques avec des personnes extraordinaires, tant sur la glace qu’en dehors. J’ai aussi eu la chance d’habiter avec la meilleure famille d’hébergement en ville (les Lang), ce qui a rendu mon expérience encore plus mémorable. Il ne faut surtout pas oublier le championnat de 2017-2018 qui sera gravé dans ma tête à tout jamais. Un gros merci à tous de m’avoir fait vivre de beaux moments au sein de la communauté. »
Certes l’un des joueurs les plus populaires et spectaculaires de la jeune histoire du Blizzard grâce à son charisme, son talent et à son don de soulever la foule, Francis Asselin a été sans contredit l’un des grands artisans de la conquête du championnat des séries éliminatoires du Blizzard à sa première campagne dans la Ligue de hockey junior A des Maritimes. Un vrai conte de fée! Asselin aura disputé 69 rencontres en deux saisons avec Edmundston. En 2017-2018, il a affiché une moyenne de buts accordés de 2,60 comparativement à 3,09 la saison dernière.
