OTTAWA, Ontario – The Edmundston Blizzard’s players underwent a tough test in their first game of the Eastern Canadian Championship (Fred Page Cup) in the nation’s capital when they lost 4-1 to the host team, the Ottawa Junior A. Senators, on Wednesday night.
The Senators scored two goals in an empty net at the end of the third period. The game was close on the scoreboard but that was it. Had it not been for the masterful performance of goalkeeper Francis Asselin, who multiplied miraculous saves, the Blizzard would have found the evening a lot more difficult. The local team clearly dominated the game with a 42-17 shots-on-goal advantage.
No goal was scored in the first period, a long twenty minutes where the Blizzard seems absent. The Senators fired 17 shots at Asselin and Edmundston retaliated with two small shots.
The Senators scored their first two goals on the power play, the first by Finn Evans at 4:26 of the second, and the second at 8:01 by defenseman Michael Thomas at 8:01 of the third.
The Blizzard nevertheless managed to tie the score at 1 at the start of the third period (1:32) thanks to Dany Coulombe who deflected the puck from Tristan Mercure’s point shot. Liam Leonard also collected an assist on the play.
At the end of the third, head coach Ryan Salvis had no choice but to call his goalkeeper to the bench to send a sixth forward on the ice. But the plan did not work, the Senators finishing the game with two empty net goals at 18:27 and 19:18.
Asselin was named player of the game for the Blizzard. Coulombe was the other Edmundston player who stood up during the game.
The Blizzard’s power play inefficiency was also a factor in the game. Blizzard was silenced on six occasions. The Senators were twice successful in three attempts.
The Blizzard will get back to action for its second round-robin game on Thursday at 3:30 pm (local time) to face the Longueuil Collège français who defeated the Carleton Place Canadians 2-1 earlier Wednesday.

Le Blizzard s’incline à son premier match à Ottawa
OTTAWA, Ontario – Le Blizzard d’Edmundston a subi un test difficile à son premier match du championnat de l’Est canadien (coupe Fred Page) dans la capitale nationale quand il s’est incliné 4 à 1 devant l’équipe hôtesse, les Sénateurs Junior A d’Ottawa, mercredi soir.
Les Sénateurs ont marqué deux buts dans un filet désert à la fin de la troisième période. La rencontre a été serrée au pointage. N’eut été de la performance magistrale du gardien Francis Asselin qui a multiplié les arrêts miraculeux, le Blizzard aurait trouvé la soirée un peu plus longue. Car les locaux ont nettement dominé la partie avec un avantage de 42-17 au chapitre des tirs.
Aucun but n’a été marqué en première période, un vingt minutes où le Blizzard était absent. Les Sénateurs ont décoché 17 tirs au but contre Asselin, Edmundston ripostant avec deux petits lancers.
Les Sénateurs ont inscrit leurs deux premiers buts en avantage numérique, le premier par Finn Evans, à 4:26 du deuxième tiers et le second à 8 :01 par le défenseur Michael Thomas à 8 :01 de la troisième.
Le Blizzard est parvenu néanmoins à créer l’égalité 1-1 en début de troisième période (1:32) grâce à Dany Coulombe qui a fait dévier un tir de la pointe de Tristan Mercure. Liam Leonard a également récolté une passe sur ce but.
En fin de troisième, l’entraineur-chef Ryan Salvis n’avait d’autre choix que de rappeler son gardien au banc en faveur d’un sixième attaquant. Mais la manœuvre n’a pas rapporté, les Sénateurs marquant coup sur coup à 18:27 et à 19:18.
Si Asselin a été proclamé le joueur du match pour le Blizzard, Coulombe a été l’autre joueur d’Edmundston qui s’est imposé en s’aventurant régulièrement en zone adverse.
L’attaque à cinq anémique du Blizzard continue de le hanter. Encore une fois, il a été réduit au silence en six occasions. Les Sénateurs, eux, ont marqué deux fois en trois tentatives.
Le Blizzard retournera sur la patinoire pour son deuxième match de la ronde préliminaire, jeudi à 15 h 30 (heure locale), pour affronter le Collège français de Longueuil qui a vaincu les Canadians de Carleton Place 2 à 1 plus tôt mercredi.
