This week’s edition of the CJHL Top 20 Weekly Rankings sees the same two clubs – the Edmundston Blizzard and the Yarmouth Mariners – in the same two positions. The Blizzard are once again ranked 19th while the Mariners are an Honorable Mention.
Edmundston went 1-1 on the week. On Thursday night in Summerside, the Blizzard pumped 42 shots on net. It was to no avail however, as the hometown Caps defeated Edmundston 4-0. Myles Hektor and Francis Asselin combined for 29 saves in the loss. Returning home on Sunday afternoon, the Blizzard registered a goal in each period during a 3-1 victory over the Miramichi Timberwolves. Nolan Alward, Alexandre Jacob and Kyle Ward contributed the goals while Asselin made 31 saves to secure the win. With the victory, the Blizzard enter the last full month of the regular season schedule with a record of 27-8-3-0 and 57 points. They lead the Yarmouth Mariners by four points in the overall standings and the Western Capitals by ten points while holding down top spot in the Eastlink North Division.
The Blizzard take to the ice just once this week. On Sunday at 3PM they’ll play host to the Campbellton Tigers and the Centre Jean-Daigle.
The Mariners went 2-0 last week. On Thursday night in New Glasgow, Andrew Martell scored twice, Aaron Maillet and Logan Timmons added singles, Adam Pilotte recorded three assists and Leif Hertz stopped 27 shots in a 4-2 win over the Pictou County Weeks Crushers. The Mariners scored twice in both the first and third periods while the Yarmouth powerplay – currently tied for the league’s best statistically – potted a pair of goals. The following night in Berwick, three third period goals would help pave the way for a 5-2 win over the Valley Wildcats. Luc Poirier, Connor Peveril and Patrick Daley joined Martell and Maillet as the goal scorers on the evening for Yarmouth. Daley and Poirier would also chip in a pair of assists. Thomson Phinney made 32 saves in the victory, which improved the Mariners’ record to 26-11-1-0 and 53 points, good for top spot in the Eastlink South Division, three ahead of the South Shore Lumberjacks.
The Mariners return home for a pair of weekend games. On Friday night they host the Pictou County Weeks Crushers while on Saturday, they take on the Woodstock Slammers. Both game begin at 7:30PM.
