EDMUNDSTON, New Brunswick – The Edmundston Blizzard’s leading scorer at the end of the 2021-2022 season, Tristan Therrien, will continue his career with the University of Wisconsin-Superior Yellowjackets, a team that is part of the NCAA, division III – Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.
Superior is a city of 26,000 inhabitants located in the State of Wisconsin, on the shores of Lake Superior and a few kilometers from the border with the State of Minnesota. Tristan will be studying business administration at the University of Wisconsin-Superior.
Last season, Therrien tallied 49 points (20 g, 29 a) in 34 games, ranking 11th in scoring in the Maritime Hockey League (MHL).
Although his association with the American team is only announced now, the 20-year-old forward from Prévost, Quebec, admits that the talks began several months ago. “I had been in communication with them since about November and made my decision a few weeks after the MHL playoffs,” the No. 17 forward said Friday night.
After two seasons in the MHL during which he shone in Truro and Edmundston, Therrien is happy to join the ranks of the Yellowjackets. “I always aimed for university hockey in order to give myself more time to develop as a player and to be able to do quality studies,” he said.
Tristan reports that he has a few friends and former teammates who play in the NCAA. Interestingly, Yellowjackets number one goaltender is former Blizzard keeper Myles Hektor, who helped Edmundston win the MHL playoff championship in 2018. With Superior in 2021-2022, Hektor showed a tremendous 2.33 goals against in 20 games. Hektor won the Wisconsin conference championship in 2020-2021 as he was the starting goalie in the last game for his team. He confirmed he would be back for one final season with the Yellowjackets. Hektor said Friday evening that he had recently chatted with Tristan and that he was very happy to have him join the team.
Tristan Therrien will be heading to Superior towards the end of August and expects to play a schedule varying between 25 and 35 games, playoff games included. The NCAA – Division III consists of 90 teams. Last season, the University of Wisconsin-Superior compiled a 15-12-2 record, losing in the conference semifinals.
During his stay in Edmundston, Tristan Therrien said that he really enjoyed it. “A big thank you to everyone. Despite COVID, we could feel the support of fans, billet families and the organization throughout the season in highs and lows. Playing in Edmundston was truly a unique experience within Junior A hockey in Canada. I really wish I could have brought a championship back here (to Edmundston),” said Therrien.

La saison dernière, Therrien a accumulé 49 points (20 b, 29 p) en 34 rencontres, au 11e rang des pointeurs de la Ligue de hockey des Maritimes (LHM).
Bien que son association avec l’équipe américaine ne soit annoncée que maintenant, l’attaquant de 20 ans de Prévost, au Québec, admet que les pourparlers ont commencé il y a déjà plusieurs mois. « J’étais en communication avec eux depuis environ le mois de novembre et j’ai pris ma décision quelques semaines après les séries éliminatoires de la LHM », a confié l’attaquant numéro 17 vendredi soir.
Après deux saisons dans la LHM pendant lesquelles il a brillé à Truro et à Edmundston, Therrien est heureux de joindre les rangs des Yellowjackets. « J’ai toujours visé le hockey universitaire afin de me donner plus de temps pour me développer en tant que joueur et de pouvoir faire des études de qualité », a-t-il précisé.
Tristan signale qu’il a quelques amis et des anciens coéquipiers qui évoluent dans la NCAA. Fait intéressant, les Yellowjackets ont pour gardien numéro un l’ancien portier du Blizzard, Myles Hektor, qui a remporté le championnat des séries éliminatoires de la LHM en 2018. Ce dernier a connu une saison du tonnerre en 2021-2022 avec une moyenne de buts alloués de 2,33 en 20 parties à Superior. Hektor a remporté le championnat de l’association du Wisconsin en 2020-2021 en prenant part au dernier match devant le filet des siens. Il a confirmé qu’il serait de retour pour une dernière saison avec les Yellowjackets. Hektor a indiqué vendredi soir qu’il avait clavardé récemment avec Tristan et qu’il était bien content de sa venue au sein de l’équipe.
Tristan Therrien prendra la route de Superior vers la fin aout et s’attend de disputer un calendrier variant entre 25 et 35 parties, matchs des séries inclus. Son séjour à Edmundston, Tristan Therrien l’a vraiment apprécié. « Un gros merci à tout le monde. Malgré la COVID, on a pu sentir l’appui des partisans, des familles d’hébergement et de l’organisation tout au long de la saison dans les hauts comme dans les bas. Jouer à Edmundston a été vraiment une expérience unique au sein du hockey junior A au Canada. J’aurais vraiment aimé pouvoir ramener un championnat ici (à Edmundston) », a déclaré Therrien.
