The Yarmouth Mariners have announced that forward Sam Gillis has committed to Ontario Tech University for the 2022-23 season.
The 21-year-old from Sydney, N.S. was selected by the Mariners in the 1st Round, 11th overall, in the 2018 MHL Entry Draft. Over the course of his four-year MHL career, Gillis had 69 goals and 102 assists in 170 regular season games, with four goals and seven assists in 21 playoff games.
In his rookie season of 2018-19, Gillis had two goals and 21 assists in 47 games. He also played in ten playoff games as the Mariners captured the Canadian Tire Cup. Gillis landed in the top 20 of MHL scoring in 2019-20 with 25 goals and 28 assists in 51 games. He had 21 goals and 21 assists in 34 games in 2020-21, which was fifth-best in the MHL, to go with two goals and five assists during the Canadian Tire Cup Playoff Round Robin.
Gillis matched his career-best point total with 21 goals and 32 assists in 38 games in 2021-22, which led the Mariners and was seventh-best in the MHL. He had two goals and two assists in six games as Yarmouth fell to Valley in the first round.
