Mariners’ Kelly commits to University of Windsor

The University of Windsor Lancers have announced that Yarmouth Mariners forward Nathan Kelly has committed to their program for 2023-24.

The 20-year-old from Paradise, Newfoundland was a territorial draft selection by the Fredericton Red Wings in the 2019 MHL Entry Draft, going 52nd overall. In his four seasons in the Maritime Junior Hockey League (MHL), Kelly tallied 50 goals and 89 assists in 142 games, as well as eight goals and nine assists in 21 playoff games.

In his rookie season of 2019-20, Kelly finished tied for sixth in rookie scoring with 35 points in 47 games (thirteen goals and 22 assists). He had seven goals and six assists in 25 games in 2020-21. Kelly added one goal and one assist in four games during the Canadian Tire Cup Playoff Round Robin and then two goals in two games during the playoffs.

The following season, Kelly scored seven goals to go with thirteen assists in 26 games. That was followed with one goal and two assists in five playoff games. He was also named to the Eastlink North team of the Week once in 2021-22.

Kelly started the 2022-23 season in Fredericton with nine goals and 28 assists in 21 games. He was sitting third in league scoring when he was dealt to Yarmouth before the trade deadline. Once with the Mariners, Kelly went on a tear, scoring fourteen goals and adding 20 assists in 23 games. In the Metalfab MHL Cup Playoffs, Kelly had four goals and six assists in ten games to help Yarmouth capture the league title.
