The Maritime Hockey League is seeking qualified applications for the contract position Director, Officiating & Player Safety

General Scope & Term

The Director, Officiating & Player Safety will be responsible for the oversight, coordination, and advancement of all assigned player safety initiatives within the Maritime Hockey League. This position will serve as a critical conduit between the League, Branch officiating leadership, and team personnel to promote a consistent, fair, and safe playing environment across the league.

This is a contracted position, through a bi-annual honorarium reflective of the scope and responsibilities. The anticipated time commitment averages 5 hours per week (approx. 20 hrs per month in season)recognizing the need for flexible engagement based on league activity, reporting requirements, and seasonal demands.

Confidentiality and Conduct

The Director is expected to uphold the highest standards of confidentiality, professionalism, and impartiality in all matters, especially those related to officiating reviews and player conduct.

Accountabilities

The Director, Officiating & Player Safety is accountable to the MHL Commissioner and may be required to submit periodic reports outlining key activities, challenges, and recommendations. Performance will be evaluated based on the effectiveness of communication, consistency in application of safety-related policies, and the overall impact on player safety and officiating standards within the league.

Responsibilities

Reporting to the Maritime Hockey League’s Commissioner, and collaborating with the Director of Hockey Operations, the Director of Officiating & Player Safety, will be responsible for administering the league’s player safety initiatives:

    • Act as liaison between the League and the Branch RICs for communication and collaboration on officiating matters and proposals;
    • Conduct periodic discussions with team personnel to identify concerns and questions related to officiating and player safety;
    • Working with the Commissioner and related league directors to review proposed playing rule changes and player safety proposals for implementation within the MHL;
    • Review major and match penalties assessed to league players and identify opportunities to provide educational guidance to teams and the Branch RICs to improve consistency in the application of the playing rules and improved adaptation to the rules by the league’s players.
    • Collaborate with the league’s teams and Branch RICs in the development of instructional materials to support educational opportunities for players and officials.
    • Lead annual orientation with league coaching and other key personnel at the start of each season to detail rule changes, interpretations, and to respond to questions of clarification.
    • Support the identification and selection of officials for regional and national events (e.g. Centennial Cup) working in collaboration with Hockey Canada, the CJHL, and the Branch RICs.
    • Provide support and advice to MHL Discipline Committee and Director, Discipline upon request;
    • Responsible for communication to all MHL Coaches and General Managers on officiating matters and rule changes;
    • Establish monthly communication with the league Executive Committee, and General Managers Committee on officiating matters and updates;

Primary Focus Areas

    • The primary focus areas for the position will seek to enhance alignment with the RIC’s to provide insight into situations where calls on ice are either improperly applied or, conversely, applied in the textbook manner. This will help bring consistency and offer the RICs with the type of feedback and report materials to support RIC’s and their officials.
    • Apply communication strategies with GM’s and Coaches so that teams fully comprehend the playing rules, understand how they are being applied by the officials and how they might work with their respective teams to improve.
