MHL Showcase – Day 1 Recap

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

Truro, Nova Scotia (October 9, 2018 – It was a busy day for all Maritime Hockey League teams at the Pictou County Wellness Centre during Day 1 of the MHL Showcase. Three teams from the Eastlink North and Eastlink South each posted victories.

On the main ice surface, the Summerside Western Capitals got the action started at 1 p.m. with a 4-1 win over the South Shore Lumberjacks. Kallum Muirhead, Calum MacPherson, Josh MacDonald, and Marc Richard each had a goal and an assist for Summerside. Next up, Myles Hektor made 31 saves and Kyle Sexton scored the winner on the powerplay as the Truro Bearcats got by the Miramichi Timberwolves 3-1.

The Amherst Ramblers picked up their seventh win of the season, 3-0 victory over Campbellton. Alex Lafreniere posted a goal and an assist for Amherst, while Matt Williams stopped all 27 shots he faced for the shutout. Finally on the main ice pad, Grand Falls held on to beat the host Pictou County Weeks Crushers 2-1.  All of the scoring was done in the 1st period, with Chris Melendez and Jean-Simon Belanger finding the back of the net for the Rapids.

Over on the second ice pad, St. Stephen picked up a 3-2 victory over the Valley Wildcats. Ryan MacDonald scored the winner 1:35 after Matt Warner had tied the game for Valley. Following that game, it was a rematch of last year’s MHL Championship as Yarmouth took on Edmundston.  Matt Barron scored a hat trick as the Mariners won 5-2.
