A special week of games focused on Indigenous recognition and reconciliation begins tonight with the Miramichi Timberwolves on the road to face the Grand Falls Rapids at the E. & P. Sénéchal Centre. The Week of Reconciliation, sponsored by Scotiabank will run until December 5th with each of the MHL’s twelve teams hosting a game.
Teams involved in every Week of Reconciliation game will be wearing specially designed jerseys which were created in consultation with local First Nations. The message “Every Child Matters” will be emblazoned on the jerseys. A photo of residential school survivors is also present. All teams are colour coordinated with the same design. The jerseys will be auctioned off by each team at the conclusion of the schedule.
Former NHLer Everett Sanipass, who was born in the Elsipogtog First Nation, helped the MHL’s event committee and will be present at a number of the Week of Reconciliation games.
