Summerside’s Brodie MacArthur commits to UPEI

The UPEI Panthers have announced that the Maritime Junior Hockey League’s (MHL) all-time leading scorer, Brodie MacArthur, has committed to the U SPORTS program after a historic four-year run with the Summerside Western Capitals.

The 21-year-old from Summerside was drafted in the 1st round, 10th overall, by the Western Capitals in the 2015 MHL Entry Draft. He joined the team for the 2016-17 season, putting up 15 goals and 35 assists in 50 games. In the playoffs, MacArthur had one goal and five assists in ten games as Summerside lost in the Eastlink North Final to Miramichi. His efforts garnered him a spot on the MHL’s Rookie All-Star Team, and he was named Pro Cresting Rookie of the Month in November 2016.

MacArthur finished second in league scoring in 2017-18 to teammate T.J. Shea, with 29 goals and 60 assists in 45 games. Despite Summerside’s loss in the Eastlink North Final to the eventual league champion Edmundston Blizzard, MacArthur finished second in playoff scoring with four goals and 17 assists in 12 games. He was named to the All-Star Team, and was honoured twice in the Gongshow Three Stars of the Month as 2nd Star in January 2018 and 1st Star in February/March 2018.

From there, MacArthur went on an incredible two-year run with 218 total points. His 43 goals and 67 assists in 2018-19 were 34 points more than Jean-Simon Belanger of the Grand Falls Rapids, who finished second in league scoring. MacArthur added two goals and eight assists in ten playoff games as Summerside lost to Campbellton in the Eastlink North Final.  Again named an All-Star at left wing, he was voted MHL Player of the Year. MacArthur was in the Gongshow Three Stars of the Month three times: 3rd Star in December 2018, 1st Star in January 2019, and 3rd Star in February/March 2019.

In 2019-20, MacArthur again led the league in scoring (45 goals, 63 assists in 51 games), was named MHL Player of the Year for the second consecutive season, and was a finalist for CJHL Player of the Year. MacArthur was named 1st Star of the Month in October 2019 and January 2020, in addition to 2nd Star in November 2019 as Summerside captured their second straight regular-season title before the COVID-19 pandemic cancelled the 2020 Canadian Tire Cup Playoffs.

MacArthur finished his MHL career with 132 goals and 225 assists in 196 regular-season games, passing Halifax Lions and DQ Blizzard great Duane Saulnier’s mark of 352 points which had stood for 30 years.

UPEI head coach Forbes MacPherson says, “Brodie does things most others can’t. He sees the ice very well and is able to get others involved because of his natural ability and vision. If he can do these things at our pace and level then he has tremendous potential.”

The MHL congratulates Brodie MacArthur on his historic Junior A career and commitment to UPEI.
