Elliott Mullen scores twice to lift Western Capitals over Ramblers

The Summerside Western Capitals held serve on home ice with a 3-2 win over Amherst on Saturday to take Game 1 of their Metalfab MHL Cup Playoff Eastlink South Division Semi-Final.

The Ramblers held a 1-0 lead after the opening period on a goal from Cooper Cormier at 15:21. The Western Capitals rallied early in the 2nd period with two goals in 2:04 to take the lead. Lane Sim evened the game 1-1 at 2:49, followed by Elliott Mullen on the powerplay at 4:54.

Amherst tied the game 2-2 just 48 seconds into the 3rd period on a goal from Ben Manos, but Mullen scored his second of the game at 2:47. That held up as the winner as Summerside struck first in the best-of-seven series. Kolten Bourret made 18 saves for the win, while Brandon Lavoie made 39 saves in the loss. Game 2 is Monday night in Amherst.

Edmundston score three goals in the 3rd to defeat Steamers

The Edmundston Blizzard went on the road to Grand-Bouctouche and picked up a 5-2 win in Game 1 of the Eastlink North Division Semi-Final in the Metalfab MHL Cup Playoffs.

The Steamers got the opening goal from Austin Sanchez on the powerplay at 15:10 of the 1st period. Lucas Fortin evened the game at 4:31 of the 2nd period, and Justin Bouchard-Trottier gave the Blizzard their first lead of the night at 12:56. Sam Bowness’ goal at 17:23 for West Kent sent the game to the 3rd period tied 2-2.

Edmundston’s Noah Larochelle broke the tie at 8:48 of the 3rd period, and William Larochelle made it 4-2 just 45 seconds later at 9:33. An empty net goal from Michael Arsenault at 18:16 sealed the Game 1 victory.

Cedric Massé made 32 saves for the win while Xavier Farrah stopped 29 of 33 shots in the loss. Game 2 is back in Edmundston on Tuesday.
