Amherst, N.S. (May 1, 2019) – It was a tough start to the 2019 Fred Page Cup for the Maritime Junior Hockey League teams. The MHL champion Yarmouth Mariners dropped a 3-2 decision to the LHJQ champion Princeville Titan, while the host Amherst Ramblers lost 4-1 to the Ottawa Jr. Senators.
In the opener, Princeville had heavy pressure early in the 1st period, outshooting Yarmouth 7-1 at one point, but a powerplay at 7:30 turned the tables and the Mariners finished a scoreless period with a 17-9 shot advantage. In the 2nd period, on another Mariners powerplay, Titan forward Dominic Cormier cut around the Yarmouth defence and beat goaltender Tyler Caseley to give Princeville a 1-0 lead. The shorthanded goal came at 4:53. Princeville would make it 2-0 before the period ended as William Bergeron scored on a one-timer to the left of Caseley at 18:36. Yarmouth outshot Princeville 15-11 in the 2nd period but was still held off the scoresheet.
That would change just 17 seconds into the 3rd period as Logan Timmons cut Princeville’s lead to 2-1. The Yarmouth forward would tie the game at 12:53 as his shot snuck by Titan goaltender Mathieu Bellemare. It looked as though the opening game could be heading to overtime, but an interference penalty against Zachery Bennett put Princeville on the powerplay with 4:38 remaining. Titan defenseman Joakim Paradis’ shot from the point was tipped, with the puck rolling towards the goal where Jeremy Cote deflected it by Caseley at 16:54 to give Princeville the lead back for good at 3-2. The shots were 46-32 in favour of Yarmouth. Timmons was named player of the game for the Mariners. Goaltender Bellemare was named player of the game for Princeville. The Titan were 2 for 5 on the powerplay, while Yarmouth was 0 for 8.
In the second game of the day, the host Amherst Ramblers took on the Ottawa Jr. Senators who enter as the defending Fred Page Cup champions. The CCHL champions took the lead at 6:24. A shot from the point from Danny Pion was tipped into the net by Colin Marshall. Then at 14:57, Noah Rowe beat Amherst goaltender Matt Williams on a one-timer down low to extend the Ottawa lead to 2-0. The Jr. Senators outshot the Ramblers 18-7 in the period.
A back and forth 2nd period had few whistles and chances for each side, notably for Amherst on a pair of powerplays. The score remained 2-0 for Ottawa until the final minute of play. With the Jr. Senators on a powerplay, Darcy Walsh wired a shot high over Williams from the faceoff dot for a 3-0 lead over Amherst with 24.5 seconds remaining. Shots were even in the 2nd period at 11-11.
The Ramblers opened the 3rd period with a number of chances, but couldn’t solve goaltender Francis Boisvert. Ottawa was kept in their own end for most of the first eight minutes of the period. On their first shot of the period, at 8:18, David Toppa extended the Jr. Senators lead to 4-0. Jacob Melanson would break the shutout at 11:19 to get Amherst on the board and cut the lead to 4-1. That’s as close as the Ramblers would get, however. Shots on goal for the game were 38-30 for Ottawa. The players of the game were David Toppa for the Jr. Senators and Jacob Melanson for the Ramblers.
Day 2 of the Fred Page Cup on Thursday at Amherst Stadium will feature Ottawa against Princeville at 3 p.m., with Yarmouth and Amherst squaring off at 7:30 in an all-MHL matchup. The action is live on Eastlink Community TV channels 10 and 610, as well as online on HockeyTV. The round robin wraps up Friday, with the semifinal on Saturday and final on Sunday. The winner will advance to the National Jr. A Championship in Brooks, Alberta from May 11th to 19th.

Les Mariners de Yarmouth, champions de la LHM, se sont inclinés 3 à 2 contre le Titan de Princeville, champion de la LHJQ. Pendant ce temps, l’équipe hôtesse du tournoi, les Rambers d’Amherst, ont baissé pavillon 4 à 1 devant les Sénateurs d’Ottawa.
Princeville a pressé le pas dès le début de la période initiale, dominant Yarmouth 7 à 1 au chapitre des tirs au but à un certain moment. Mais un avantage numérique à 7:30 a permis aux Mariners de reprendre le rythme et ils ont terminé la première période sans but avec une priorité de 17-9 dans les lancers. En 2e, lors d’une autre supériorité numérique des Mariners, l’attaquant Dominic Cormier, du Titan, a mystifié la défensive de Yarmouth et déjoué le gardien Tyler Caseley pour donner les devants 1 à 0 à Princeville. Ce but a été inscrit à court d’un homme à 4:53. Princeville a doublé son avance à 2 à 0 avant la fin de la période médiane quand William Bergeron y est allé d’un tir sur réception pour vaincre Caseley à 18:36. Yarmouth a dominé 15-11 au chapitre des tirs en 2e mais a été évincé de la feuille de pointage.
La chance allait enfin sourire aux Mariners à seulement 17 secondes du début de la troisième période avec le filet de Logan Timmons qui réduisait l’écart à 2 à 1. L’attaquant Timmons allait plus tard créer l’égalité (à 12:53) quand son tir a bafoué le gardien du Titan, Mathieu Bellemare. La rencontre semblait de toute évidence se rendre en prolongation mais une punition pour obstruction décerné à Zachery Bennett offrait à Princeville une supériorité numérique avec 4:38 à écouler. Un tir de la pointe du défenseur Joakim Paradis a été dévié par Jérémy Côté derrière Caseley à 16:54, redonnant pour de bon l’avantage 3 à 2 à Princeville. Au total, Yarmouth a décoché 46 tirs contre 32 pour Princeville. Timmons a été nommé le joueur du match pour les Mariners. Le gardien Bellemare a mérité pareil honneur pour Princeville. Le Titan a affiché un rendement de 2 en 5 en avantage numérique. Yarmouth n’a pas marqué lors de 8 attaques à cinq.
Lors du deuxième match de la journée, les Ramblers d’Amherst se mesuraient aux Sénateurs d’Ottawa, champions en titre de la coupe Fred Page. Les champions de la LHCC ont pris les devants à 6 :24 du premier vingt grâce à Colin Marshall qui a fait dévié un tir de la pointe de Danny Pion. Puis, à 14:57, Noah Rowe a trompé la vigilance du gardien Matt Williams d’un tir sur réception pour porter la marque à 2 à 0 en faveur d’Ottawa. Les Sénateurs ont nettement dominé les Rambers 18-7 dans la colonne des tirs en première.
La deuxième période a été disputée à vive allure, et ce, avec peu d’arrêts de jeu et des chances de marquer de part et d’autre. Amherst a notamment eu l’occasion de revenir de l’arrière lors de deux supériorités numériques. La marque de 2 à 0 est restée intacte jusqu’à la dernière minute de jeu de la deuxième période. Lors d’un avantage numérique, Darcy Walsh a décoché un puissant tir du cercle d’engagement battant Williams dans la partie supérieure du filet procurant une avance de 3 à 0 aux Sénateurs avec seulement 24,5 secondes à faire. Les deux équipes ont complété l’engagement avec 11 lancers de chaque côté.
Les Ramblers ont amorcé la troisième période avec quelques bonnes chances de marquer mais n’ont pas été en mesure de déjouer Francis Boisvert. Ottawa a été embouteillé dans son territoire la majorité des huit premières minutes. À leur premier tir, à 8:18, David Toppa ajoutait un quatrième but aux Sénateurs. Jacob Melanson a privé le gardien Boisvert d’un jeu blanc à 11:19 en réduisant l’avance d’Ottawa à 4 à 1. Mais ce fut trop peu trop tard pour l’équipe locale. Ottawa a dominé 38-30 au chapitre des tirs. Les meilleurs joueurs de la rencontre ont été David Toppa, pour les Sénateurs, et Jacob Melanson, des Ramblers.
L’action reprend jeudi au Amherst Stadium. Ottawa affrontera Princeville à 15 h et Yarmouth croisera le fer avec Amherst à 19 h 30 dans un duel opposant les deux équipes de la LHM. Les matchs sont diffusés en direct sur les canaux 10 et 610 à Eastlink Community TV ainsi qu’à HockeyTV. Le tournoi à la ronde prendra fin vendredi. La demi-finale sera présentée samedi et la finale dimanche. Le champion méritera un laissez-passer pour le championnat canadien disputé à Brooks, en Alberta, du 11 au 19 mai.
