The Yarmouth Mariners bid for a comeback victory fell just short at the Centennial Cup in Portage la Prairie, Manitoba as they lost 4-3 to the CCHL champion Ottawa Jr. Senators.

The MHL champs opened the scoring at 4:52 of the 1st period as Ethan Hoffe scored his first of the tournament. Ottawa would tie the game before the end of the period, however, with a powerplay goal at 16:20. The Mariners were outshot 15-9 in the period.

The Jr. Senators dialed up the pressure in the 2nd period. They scored three times, including twice in the final three minutes, with a 13-6 shot advantage to take a 4-1 lead to the 3rd.

In the final period, Reilly Mayne scored his second goal of the Centennial Cup at 5:04 to cut the Ottawa lead to 4-2. Michael Marquez scored his second of the tournament at 7:58 to bring the score to 4-3. But that’s as close the Yarmouth Mariners would get despite a 9-6 shot advantage in the 3rd period.

The Mariners wrap up their round-robin play on Wednesday against the LHJQ champion Terrebonne Cobras.
