Truro, N.S. (June 16, 2023) – The 2023 Maritime Junior Hockey League (MHL) Entry Draft was held Thursday evening, with 120 of the best young hockey players in the region selected to the league’s twelve teams over the course of ten rounds. The first two rounds were carried live on Eastlink Community TV and on Eastlink’s YouTube channel.
The newly relocated West Kent Steamers held the first overall selection and picked forward Zachary Boudreau. The 16-year-old from Irishtown, N.B. had seven goals and six assists in 33 games for Moncton, followed by two goals and two assists in twelve playoff games. It was one of three first round picks for the Steamers, and all three players chosen were from the Moncton Flyers.
Miramichi made some noise before the draft, acquiring the 2nd and 3rd overall picks from Amherst and Fredericton respectively. The Timberwolves selected forward Brody Paré second overall from the Fredericton Caps. The 16-year-old from Oromocto, N.B. had fourteen goals and thirteen assists in 35 games last season, with five goals and eight assists in eleven playoff games.
With the 3rd overall pick, the Timberwolves selected defenseman Devin Johnson. The 17-year-old from Dieppe, N.B. had one goal and nine assists in 35 games for the Moncton Flyers last season. He added one assist in four playoff games.
Grand Falls selected defenseman Luc Morais from the Moncton Flyers 4th overall. The 15-year-old from Dieppe, N.B. tallied one goal and eight assists in 33 games last season, and played in twelve playoff games.
The Amherst Ramblers selected forward Jack Hayne with the 5th overall pick. The 15-year-old from Antigonish, N.S. had nineteen goals and fifteen assists in 33 games with the Cape Breton West Islanders in 2022-23. He added three goals and one assist in four playoff games.
Edmundston had the 6th overall pick, selecting forward Darien Thomson. The 17-year-old from Lincoln, N.B. had thirteen goals and sixteen assists in 35 games last season for the Fredericton Caps, as well as three goals and three assists in eleven playoff games.
After trading down from the 3rd overall pick, the Fredericton Red Wings selected Landon Paul from the Kimball Union Academy Wildcats. The 16-year-old forward from Woodstock, N.B. had five goals and seven assists in 33 games last season.
Campbellton selected forward Brady Burke from the Cole Harbour Wolfpack with the 8th overall pick. The 16-year-old from Hammonds Plains, N.S. had thirteen goals and seventeen assists in 35 games for the Wolfpack last season. Burke added six goals and one assist in ten playoff games.
West Kent acquired the 9th overall pick from Truro and selected Nathan Weber from the Moncton Flyers. The forward from Riverview, N.B. tallied six goals and eight assists in 31 games last season with three assists in twelve playoff games.
The Pictou County Weeks Crushers selected Logan Roop from the Weeks Majors U18 10th overall. The 16-year-old from Westville, N.S. had sixteen goals and nineteen assists in 33 regular season games, followed by seven goals and three assists in twelve playoff games. Roop also had one goal in five games for Weeks at the 2023 Telus Cup.
Edmundston were back on the board with the 11th overall selection and picked forward Will Carroll from Conception Bay South, Newfoundland and Labrador. The 16-year-old had 23 goals and 30 assists in 42 games with Champions Hockey Academy last season.
And wrapping up the opening round of the 2023 MHL Entry Draft, West Kent selected defenseman Noah Collette. The 15-year-old from Bouctouche, N.B. had six goals and fourteen assists in 33 games with the Moncton Flyers last season, as well as one assist in one playoff game.

Les Steamers de West Kent, nouvellement relocalisés, ont obtenu la première sélection au total et ont choisi l’attaquant Zachary Boudreau. Le jeune homme de 16 ans originaire d’Irishtown, au Nouveau-Brunswick, a marqué 7 buts et récolté 6 passes en 33 matchs avec Moncton, puis a marqué 2 buts et récolté 2 passes en 12 matchs de séries éliminatoires. Il s’agit de l’un des trois choix de première ronde des Steamers, et les trois joueurs choisis provenaient des Flyers de Moncton.

Roop a également marqué 1 but en 5 matchs pour Weeks lors de la coupe Telus 2023.
Edmundston est revenu à la charge avec la 11e sélection au total et a choisi l’attaquant Will Carroll, de Conception Bay South, Terre-Neuve-et-Labrador. Le jeune homme de 16 ans a marqué 23 buts et obtenu 30 passes en 42 matchs avec la Champions Hockey Academy la saison dernière.
Pour conclure la première ronde de la séance de sélection de la LHM 2023, West Kent a choisi le défenseur Noah Collette. L’athlète de 15 ans originaire de Bouctouche, au Nouveau-Brunswick, a marqué 6 buts et récolté 14 passes en 33 matchs avec les Flyers de Moncton la saison dernière, en plus de récolter 1 passe lors d’un match des séries éliminatoires.
