Edmundston drop 5-3 decision to Melfort at the Centennial Cup

The Edmundston Blizzard had a 3rd period comeback fall short as they lost 5-3 to the Melfort Mustangs on Day 3 of the Centennial Cup in Calgary, AB on Saturday.

The Mustangs opened the scoring at 4:22 of the 1st period as Ashton Paul beat Blizzard goaltender Frédéric Cousineau. Jérémy D’Astous tied things up with a goal at 12:33. Shots were 10-7 for Edmundston in the period, despite having to kill off four Melfort powerplays. Zack Somers scored on the powerplays for the Mustangs at 14:37 of the 2nd period to break the tie and make it a 2-1 lead for the SJHL-champions. Melfort once again had four powerplays in the period.

In the 3rd period, Somers scored his second of the game to give Melfort a 3-1 lead. The Blizzard scored twice in 3:03 to knot things back up at 3. Noah Breau had a goal at 8:34, while Émile Fournier scored on the powerplay at 11:37. However, for the second time in the game, Melfort scored off a faceoff as Somers completed the hat trick to give the Mustangs a 4-3 lead. Danton Cox would clinch the win with an empty net goal with 17.2 seconds left for a 5-3 final.

Edmundston drop to 0-1-1-0 for the tournament. Their next game is at 3 p.m. Atlantic on Monday against the LHJQ-champion Valleyfield Braves.
