The Yarmouth Mariners have announced that former defenseman Derrick Johnson has committed to the University of Waterloo Warriors for 2019-20.

The 21-year-old from Mount Brydges, Ontario spent nearly two full seasons with the Mariners. Obtained from the Surrey Eagles of the BCHL in November 2017, Johnson had four goals and five assists in 31 games with Yarmouth in the 2017-18 season. In 14 playoff games, he would add an assist during the Mariners’ run to the league finals that season.

In 2018-19, Johnson tallied ten goals and 21 assists in 45 games. He would add another seven assists in 17 playoff games as the Mariners went on to capture the Canadian Tire Cup.

“We’re so proud of Derrick and his accomplishment,” says Yarmouth General Manager and Head Coach Laurie Barron. “Derrick had two very good years as a Mariner and goes out a champion. We wish him the best in Waterloo.”
