Amherst, N.S. (May 3, 2019) – The Princeville Titan can rest on Saturday as they advanced directly to the 2019 Fred Page Cup Final following a 5-0 victory over the host Ramblers to end the round robin. Amherst will play in Saturday’s semifinal against the Ottawa Jr. Senators, who downed the Yarmouth Mariners 5-2 in the afternoon game.
In that first game, the Mariners got on the board quickly. Pressure from the Yarmouth forecheck forced a pass into the middle of Ottawa’s zone where Matt Barron intercepted the puck and snapped a shot from the slot that beat Jr. Senators goaltender Joshua Ward at 2:56. Each team came up empty on one powerplay chance each, and shots in the 1st period were 13-10 in favour of Yarmouth.
Ottawa’s quick-strike offence would go to work midway through the 2nd period. Andrew Remer fired a shot up high to tie the game 1-1 at 12:55. Then just 10 seconds later, Owen Cole beat Yarmouth goaltender Alec MacVicar to give the Jr. Senators their first lead of the game. Yarmouth would tie things up before the end of the 2nd period as Brent Broaders found the back of the net at 14:44 on the powerplay. Shots in the period were 10-8 for the Mariners.
The Jr. Senators took over in the third period. Élie Boulerice gave Ottawa the lead on the powerplay at 8:02, finishing off a tic-tac-toe passing play. Kyle Jackson scored at 11:20 to extend the lead to 4-2. Ottawa would add another at 13:24, just seconds into another powerplay, as Remer scored his second of the game. The Jr. Senators doubled their shot total in the 3rd period with an 18-8 advantage over Yarmouth, whose season would come to an end with the 5-2 loss. Players of the game were Barron for the Mariners and Remer for the Jr. Senators.
The mission for Princeville in the final game of the round robin was simple: win, and a berth in Sunday’s final was secured. A loss to Amherst would clinch first for Ottawa and set up a rematch between the Titan and Ramblers in Saturday’s semifinal. Raphael Gagnon opened the scoring with 5:09 remaining for the Titan. His shot from the point looked to be going high on Ramblers goaltender Joel Goguen, but changed direction with two players tied up in front of the blue paint. The puck dropped into the net and was initially called no goal due to a high stick. The officials would huddle and eventually call it a good goal for Gagnon. The period would end with the Titan up 1-0 and holding a 14-5 shot advantage.
Alex Plamondon added to the Princeville lead at 1:07 of the 2nd period as he finished off a one-timer from the slot to make it a 2-0 game over Amherst. A parade to the penalty box followed, with four straight penalties against the Titan. In total it would be 6:44 of powerplay time for the Ramblers, including three short 5 on 3 advantages, but they were unable to convert. Instead, Plamondon scored his second of the night with Princeville shorthanded as he finished off a two on one with Matthew Newbury at 10:51. Shots in the period were 19-11 for the Titan.
In the 3rd period, Plamondon finished off the hat trick at 7:18 on the powerplay, and the lead would stretch to 5-0 on a goal from Marc-Olivier Lantin-Goudreau at 14:54. The shot total for the game was 41-24 for Princeville. Players of the game were Ramblers goaltender Joel Goguen and Titan forward Alex Plamondon.
The semifinal on Saturday between the Ottawa Jr. Senators and Amherst Ramblers will run at 7 p.m. at Amherst Stadium. The winner advances to the final on Sunday at 4 p.m. against the Princeville Titan. The action is live on Eastlink Community TV channels 10 and 610, as well as online on HockeyTV. The winner of the Fred Page Cup will advance to the National Jr. A Championship in Brooks, Alberta from May 11th to 19th.

Princeville bat Amherst et atteint la finale de la coupe Fred Page
Amherst, N.-É. (3 mai 2019) – Le Titan de Princeville profitera d’un jour de repos samedi après avoir assuré sa participation à la finale de la coupe Fred Page grâce à un gain de 5 à 0 aux dépens de l’équipe hôtesse, les Ramblers d’Amherst, lors du dernier match du tournoi à la ronde présenté le vendredi 3 mai. Amherst se mesurera aux Sénateurs d’Ottawa lors de la demi-finale présentée samedi. Ottawa a défait les Mariners de Yarmouth 5 à 2 lors de la rencontre de l’après-midi.
Au cours de ce premier match, les Mariners ont été les premiers à s’inscrire au tableau. Grâce à un échec-avant soutenu de Yarmouth, Ottawa a commis une erreur dans son territoire qui a profité à l’attaquant Matt Barron. Ce dernier a intercepté la passe et a décoché un tir de l’embouchure qui a trompé le gardien des Sénateurs, Joshua Ward, à 2:56 du premier engagement. Les deux formations n’ont su tirer profit de l’avantage numérique qu’elles ont obtenu lors de ce premier vingt dominé 13-10 par Yarmouth au chapitre des tirs.
La force de frappe d’Ottawa s’est manifestée à mi-chemin en deuxième période. Andrew Remer y est allé d’un tir dans la partie supérieure pour niveler les chances à 1-1 à 12:55. Dix secondes plus tard, Owen Cole venait à bout du gardien Alec MacVicar, de Yarmouth, pour procurer les devants aux Sénateurs. Yarmouth a créé l’égalité 2-2 à 14:44 lors d’une attaque à cinq. Brent Broaders a fait scintiller la lumière rouge pour redonner espoir aux Mariners qui ont mené 10-8 dans les tirs lors de la période médiane.
Les Sénateurs ont pris les choses en mai en troisième. Élie Boulerice a redonné les devants à Ottawa lors d’une supériorité numérique à 8:02 au terme d’une belle série de passes. Kyle Jackson a marqué à 11 :20 pour donner les devants 4 à 2 aux Sénateurs. Ottawa a ajouté un cinquième but à 13:24 quelques secondes au début d’une supériorité numérique lorsque Remer inscrivait son deuxième but de la rencontre. Marque finale : Ottawa 5, Yarmouth 2. Ottawa a décoché autant de lancers en troisième que lors des deux périodes précédentes. Ils ont dominé 18-8 dans les lancers. Pour Yarmouth, il s’agissait de son dernier match de la saison. Les titres de joueurs du match sont allés à Barron pour les Mariners et à Remer pour les Sénateurs.
Lors du dernier match du tournoi à la ronde, Princeville avait pour mission d’assurer, par une victoire, sa participation à la finale de dimanche. Un revers contre Amherst aurait signifié la première position pour Ottawa et aurait eu pour effet de voir le Titan et les Ramblers s’affronter à nouveau en demi-finale. Raphael Gagnon a ouvert le pointage à 5 :09 de la première période pour le Titan. Son tir de la pointe semblait haut et a changé de direction après avoir été lancé en direction de deux joueurs situés dans la zone protectrice du gardien. La rondelle est redescendue dans le filet et le but a d’abord été refusé par les arbitres prétextant que le disque avait été frappé plus haut que la normale permise. Après discussion, les officiels ont renversé leur décision pour accorder le but. La période devait se terminer par le pointage de 1 à 0 en faveur de Princeville qui a nettement dominé l’engagement en décochant 14 lancers contre 5 pour Amherst.
Alex Plamondon a ajouté à l’avance de Princeville à 1:07 du début du deuxième vingt en déjouant le cerbère d’Amherst à l’aide d’un tir sur réception depuis l’embouchure. Alors que Princeville prenait les devants 2 à 0, le Titan s’est mis à jouer avec le feu en écopant de quatre punitions d’affilée. Au total, Amherst a joué en avantage numérique pendant 6 minutes et 44 secondes, incluant trois courtes attaques à 5 contre 3. Néanmoins, Amherst a été incapables de s’inscrire au pointage. Comble de malheur, c’est le Titan qui a réussi à marquer en infériorité numérique. Plamondon a réussi son deuxième but de la partie à 10:51 à la suite d’une descente à 2 contre 1 en compagnie de Matthew Newbury. Malgré plusieurs minutes passées au cachot, le Titan est parvenu à dominer 19-11 au chapitre des tirs.
En troisième période, Plamondon a complété son tour du chapeau à 7:18 lors d’une supériorité numérique. Puis, Marc-Olivier Lantin-Goudreau faisait 5 à 0 à 14:54, ce qui donnait une avance insurmontable de 5 à 0 au Titan. Princeville a eu un avantage marqué dans la statistique des tirs (41-24). Les joueurs du match ont été le gardien Joel Goguen pour les Ramblers et l’attaquant Alex Plamondon pour le Titan.
La demi-finale de samedi mettra aux prises les Sénateurs d’Ottawa et les Ramblers d’Amherst à compter de 19 h au Amherst Stadium. Le vainqueur méritera un laissez-passer pour la finale qui se déroulera dimanche, dès 16 h, contre le Titan de Princeville. L’équipe championne méritera un laissez-passer pour le championnat national junior A qui se tiendra à Brooks, en Alberta, du 11 au 19 mai.
