Rees commits to Nipissing University

The Nipissing Lakers have announced that Yarmouth Mariners forward Jonathan Rees has committed to the program for the 2021-22 season.

The 21-year-old from Aldergrove, B.C. was obtained by the Mariners on November 25, 2018 via trade with the Delta Ice Hawks of the Pacific Junior Hockey League (PIJHL).

In 2018-19, Rees had five goals and two assists in 25 games with the Mariners. He added one goal and one assist in 14 playoff games in helping Yarmouth capture the Canadian Tire Cup.

His offensive contributions exploded in 2019-20, jumping to totals of 16 goals and 27 assists in 48 games. So far in 2020-21, Rees has tallied 16 goals and 29 assists in 35 games.

In a release from the Lakers, Rees says, “Having the opportunity to gain an education and continue to play hockey at a great school and experience something new away from home is something I’m really excited for.”

Lakers head coach Mike McParland likes what Rees can bring to his team’s lineup and is excited to add him to the mix of forwards that will suit up next season.

“Jonathan has been a solid point producer on the east coast with Yarmouth in the Maritimes League and we’re hoping he can bring that to our team,” McParland said. “We would like to score more and we believe Jonathan can help with that. We’re looking forward to having him on campus and part of our program.”

The MHL congratulates Rees on his hockey career and post-secondary commitment.
