With the Eastern Canada Cup All-Star Challenge set to begin on Monday in Trenton, Ontario, there are only a handful of games to look at in Week 11 of the Maritime Hockey League regular season and all of them on Friday.
Starting things off are the Eastlink South Division-leading Yarmouth Mariners (17-3-0-1), who make their second trip of the season to Truro to face the third-place Bearcats (12-4-1-1). Yarmouth has posted 4-1 and 4-3 wins over Truro thus far in 2018-19, and have rattled off five straight wins. This is also the MHL Game of the Week, and free to watch on HockeyTV.
Shifting attention to the Eastlink North, the first-place Summerside Western Capitals (16-3-0-0) head back to St. Stephen to place the fifth-place Aces (7-10-2-0). This is already the sixth game between them this season, and only one matchup will be left the rest of the year. The Caps are 4-1 against the Aces, but two of those wins were thrilling 2-1 finals where St. Stephen’s goaltenders stood on their heads to limit the high-powered Summerside offence despite facing 42 and 52 shots respectively.
Finally, second-place Campbellton (10-4-1-2) is home to fourth-place Miramichi (9-8-2-0). The teams met way back on September 22nd in Miramichi, where the Tigers skated away with a 3-2 victory over the host Timberwolves. Campbellton scored three times in the 2nd period, but Miramichi made it close with two of their own in a strong final frame. Just three points separate these teams in the standings, making it an important matchup as the North begins to sort itself out.
A reminder that Grand Falls’ road trip to Nova Scotia against South Shore and Yarmouth this weekend has been postponed. The game Friday between Amherst and Valley in Berwick is also off the books for this week. Dates have yet to be determined for when those games will be played.
