Former Capital, Crusher Hickey commits to Nipissing University Lakers

Former Pictou County Weeks Crushers co-captain and Summerside Western Capital Jacob Hickey has committed to the Nipissing University Lakers in North Bay, Ontario for 2019-20.

The 21-year-old from Hammonds Plains, N.S. spent nearly four full seasons in the Maritime Junior Hockey League (MHL). Hickey was selected in the 3rd Round, 27th overall, in the 2014 MHL Entry Draft by the Crushers. As a rookie in 2015-16, he posted six goals and 13 assists in 26 games with Pictou County after playing 15 games with the Blainville-Boisbriand Armada of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League.

In 2016-17, Hickey’s goal-scoring skills came to the forefront as he scored 20 times to go with 19 assists in 45 games to help the Crushers win the Eastlink South Division. In the playoffs, he had two goals and two assists in seven games. Hickey led the Crushers with 28 goals in playing all 50 games in 2017-18 . Adding in his 23 assists, he finished third on the team in points.

Named a co-captain in 2018-19, he has 12 goals and 15 assists in 25 games before being dealt in a blockbuster deal with teammate Dylan Riley at the trade deadline to the Summerside Western Capitals. From there, Hickey had five goals and five assists in 22 games with one goal in Summerside’s ten playoff games.
