MHL schedule enters December

Three months of the Maritime Junior Hockey League (MHL) schedule are in the books and we’re three weeks from the Christmas Break. After a jam-packed schedule last week, we have three days of action on the ice from Friday through Sunday. The trade deadline is a little over a month away, and teams are already making roster changes, with six trades in the past week alone.

The action kicks off with four games on Friday. The Valley Wildcats (7-18-1-0) head to New Brunswick, starting with a matchup on the big ice in Campbellton (11-10-3-0). The Wildcats scored three unanswered goals to beat the Tigers 5-3 in Berwick last weekend and then lost to Yarmouth (15-8-2-1) the following night. Campbellton lost a 5-4 overtime decision in Amherst (13-11-1-0) on Saturday to finish their road trip. Miramichi (7-14-3-1) is back on the road as they visit Fredericton (12-9-1-0). The Timberwolves edged Pictou County (13-8-1-0) 5-4 last week, sandwiched around losses against Campbellton and Grand Falls (9-12-2-1). The Red Wings split their games last week, with a loss to Edmundston (15-6-1-1) before an epic 15-round shootout victory in Summerside (21-3-0-1). Fredericton have won two of three meetings with Miramichi this season.

Yarmouth and South Shore (15-9-1-1) renew acquaintances in Bridgewater. The Lumberjacks are 0-5-1-0 in their past six games and dropped a 3-2 decision to the Mariners last Friday, part of a big weekend for Yarmouth that launched them into first place in the Eastlink South. Finally, Edmundston travels to Grand Falls. The Blizzard took the first two meetings before the Rapids picked up a 5-4 win on October 25th.

There are four more games on tap for Saturday evening. Valley finishes up their road trip with a stop in Miramichi. The Timberwolves picked up a 7-5 victory over the Wildcats just two weeks ago. Summerside hit the ice in Fredericton, looking to avenge last weekend’s shootout loss on home ice. We then have two big Eastlink South tilts. South Shore travel to Amherst for another matchup with the Ramblers. The Lumberjacks have won two of three meetings, but the last two have each been decided by just one goal. Finally, the Bearcats (8-10-2-4) welcome the Crushers to the RECC. The Crushers had their undefeated streak snapped against Miramichi, but are 7-2-1-0 in their last ten games. The Bearcats finished November with a 6-2-2-0 record and made two trades to bolster their lineup this week. The last time these teams met in Truro, it was a wild 8-7 shootout victory for Pictou County.

And the week concludes with a busy Sunday schedule. The Western Capitals are back in Edmundston for the MHL Game of the week, which is free to watch on HockeyTV. This is the fourth and final trip or Summerside to Centre Jean Diagle this season, and these teams face off just two more times. The Blizzard won the first meeting, but Summerside has won the last four, including in back to back nights in Edmundston last month. Elsewhere, Fredericton travels to Grand Falls, looking for their third win in four tries against the Rapids. And in Yarmouth, the Mariners host the Crushers. This is the first trip to Yarmouth for Pictou County, and the teams have split their first two games.

All games are available on HockeyTV.
