The Summerside Western Capitals have announced that forward Jérôme Gilbert has committed to play at McGill University.

The 20-year-old from Val-d’Or, Quebec joined the Yarmouth Mariners in 2022-23, playing all 52 games that season. He registered eighteen goals and 35 assists for 53 points, finishing just one point behind Pictou County’s Ben Mercer in the rookie scoring race. He led all rookies in assists and was fourth in both goals and powerplay points. Gilbert was also one of three MHL rookies with three game-winning goals. He had five goals and ten assists in twelve playoff games to finish fifth in playoff scoring as Yarmouth captured the Metalfab MHL Cup. Gilbert picked up two assists in five games at the Centennial Cup in Portage la Prairie, Manitoba.

Gilbert played 27 games with the Mariners in 2023-24 before being dealt to the SJHL’s Flin Flon Bombers just before the trade deadline. At the time of the trade, he was second in team scoring with ten goals and 23 assists.

He was brought back to the MHL in a trade before the MHL Entry Draft in June 2024, joining the Miramichi Timberwolves. Gilbert had eleven goals and 22 assists in 25 games for the Timberwolves before being traded back to Yarmouth in early December. He had two goals and five assists in seven games for the Mariners, but once again found himself on the move, this time to Summerside before the trade deadline in January. Finishing out the 2024-25 season, Gilbert had eight goals and nine assists in eighteen games with the Western Capitals, plus three goals in three playoff games.

The MHL congratulates Gilbert on his post-secondary commitment.
